Drew vs Northgate Basketball

On Friday, the Northgate Vikings Basketball teams hosted their senior night against the Titans of Drew for their regular season finale in region play. The Lady Vikings were looking to secure the 2-seed heading into the region tournament, while the Boys were looking to keep a tie for the 1-seed with rival McIntosh.

The Lady Vikings got off to a hot start both offensively and defensively in the first quarter. Scoring 17 in the opening quarter and only giving up 2 points set the tone for the rest of the dominant performance against the Lady Titans. Lady Titans found a little offense in the second quarter with 9 points, but the Lady Vikes continued to extend their lead with an 11-point quarter of their own to take a 17-point lead into the half. Then the fun started - a THIRTY, yes 30, point third quarter for Northgate and an 11-point fourth to cap off the 69-29 win for the Lady Vikings.

LOTS of scoring from 10 different players out of the 14, the entire roster, who was able to take the floor. DeAsia Stinson led the scoring effort again for Northgate with 16 points. Brooklyn Walker had 14 points and the Lady Vikes only 3-point FG’s with 3 of them. Senior Chanira Isaac and Aaliyah Reynolds each added 8 points. Seniors Emily Kirk and Holly Metz had 6 points apiece. Nivea Severe added 4, Brierre Jarvis added 3, and Talia Caines and Senior Jasmine Arnold each with 2 points.

The boys got off to a slower start defensively, but the offenses were both locked in early in this game. Holding a 3 point lead after an 18-point opening quarter, the Vikings needed to extend their lead before the half. They did just that. With 24 points in the second quarter, the Vikings carried an 11 point lead into the locker room at the break. They then returned with even more offensive superiority with a 20-point third and a WHOPPING 32-point fourth quarter. Vikings got the 94-73 victory over the Titans, and made history setting the record for most points in a victory for Northgate in school history!

Senior Paul Walthall Jr. exploded for 27 points from all around the court, with several 2-point jumpers, a dunk, some free throws, and a 3-pointer. Dontae Smith put in the work for a 19-point game. Senior Jakai Cunningham always versatile as well with a 14-point effort. Senior Armando Mercado had 9 points for himself. Thompson Warren and Jordan Thornton each with 5 points. Several young players came off the bench during the fourth quarter and accounted for 14 of the 32 points scored in the final period for the Vikings.

With the incredible talent on display on the court, on the sidelines by the cheerleaders, and a fantastic DJ, it surely all made for an amazing environment! Shoutout to DJ King Justice for showcasing his incredible DJ skills throughout the season at several games.
