Last Saturday, the Northgate Basketball teams traveled to Newnan for a non-region in-county rivalry game. The Lady Vikings and Lady Cougars would face off for the county championship, with the Northgate Boys needing a win in order to secure the title for the first time since 2006.

The Lady Vikes and Lady Cougars stayed locked tight in a close game. Each scored 15 in the opening period before the offenses slowed some. Northgate took a 5 point lead into halftime. Lady Vikes capitalized on key turnovers and pulled away for the 61-40 win. This win secured the second straight county championship for Northgate in Head Coach Alicia Sands’ second year at the helm.

The boys’ teams had a defensive struggle of their own with a game that saw less than 100 points combined between the two teams. The Vikings led after the first quarter and held onto the lead going into the half. Cougars never backed down, and came out on top in the end to secure the 50-45 victory over the Vikings to force a 3-way tie for the county championship, with no one being able to claim sole possession of it this year.

Newnan continued their region play on Thursday at home against South Paulding where the girls and boys temas both fell to the Spartans. Girls fell 52-36 with the boys dropping the game 61-54. Newnan Lady Cougars are now 4-11 on the season and 1-6 in region play. Newnan Boys team moved to 11-7 on the season and 2-5 in region play.

Northgate also returned to their region schedule as they travelled to Harris County on Thursday. The Lady Vikings fell 47-45 in a close game against a 2-loss Harris County girls team. The boys were able to secure a 63-58 much-needed victory against Harris County. Lady Vikings fell to 13-5 (2-1 in region), while the Boys improved their record to 12-6 (2-1 in region).

Newnan returns to action on Friday 1/19 for alumni and pink out night as they host Langston Hughes and they will hit the road on Tuesday 1/23 to travel to Douglas County. Game times for all of these games are girls at 6:00 with boys to follow. Northgate will play again on Saturday 1/20 at home against the nearby Creekside Seminoles with girls at 5:30 and boys to follow.
